Daniel 6 — Formed Before the Lions

Primary Text: Daniel 6:1–9 (CEB)

Big Idea

Tests don’t build trust; habits do. When pressure comes, it doesn’t create faith—it reveals what has been formed.

1. A World That Promises Safety but Produces Anxiety

Daniel 6:1–9

  • King Darius has everything the culture equates with peace: authority, information, and influence.
  • Darius is the most powerful man in the land, yet he is the one who cannot sleep.

Psalm 56:3
Isaiah 26:3

Peace doesn’t come from control—it comes from trust.

Key Truth:
Power that requires constant affirmation is already insecure. Control is not the same thing as peace.

2. Holy Habits: The Power of Formation

Daniel 6:10

  • Daniel prayed three times a day, "just like he always did."
  • This was not heroic improvisation, but holy formation.
  • Daniel did not rise to the occasion; he defaulted to his formation.

Matthew 6:27

Worry is the pursuit of control without the power to achieve it.

Key Truth:
Crisis doesn’t create faith—it exposes formation. Peace is a byproduct of trust practiced daily.

3. Two Men. One Night. Very Different Experiences

Daniel 6:14–18

  • The one who trusted God rested. The one who trusted systems panicked.
  • Control promises peace but always delivers anxiety.

1 Peter 5:7
Psalm 4:8

Peace doesn’t come from control—it comes from trust.

4. The Foundation Revealed

Daniel 6:11–15

  • Faithfulness did not protect Daniel from danger, but it kept his trust from being hollowed out.
  • Culture defines safety as alignment, acceptance, and comfort; God defines safety as dependency and surrender.

Key Truth:
A faith built on circumstances collapses when circumstances change. The storm doesn't destroy the house; it reveals the foundation.

Matthew 7:24–27

5. Faithful Influence and Ripples of Trust

Daniel 6:21–28

  • Daniel’s trust reshaped a king’s theology and affected an entire empire.
  • Sin has collateral damage, but faithfulness has holy influence.
  • The habits that shape our trust in quiet seasons determine our peace and our impact when we face lions.

Key Truth:
Peace doesn't come from knowing or controlling everything; it comes from knowing Who holds everything.

Tests don’t build trust. Habits do.

How Do We Practice Holy Formation?

  1. Release control daily. Holy habits like prayer and Scripture are about surrender, not earning favor.
  2. Practice trust in quiet seasons. We are formed by how we practice trust when nothing dramatic is happening.
  3. Choose daily return over radical change. Formation happens one prayer, one habit, and one act of obedience at a time.
  4. Align with ultimate good. Obedience to God is not rebellion; it is alignment with the living God.

Final Question

What habits are forming you right now—are they preparing you for peace or for anxiety?
