The Pride Dilemma
Text: Daniel 4:1–27, 37
Date: March 15, 2026
Main Idea
God graciously warns the proud so that, through humility, He can restore them—because
the God who humbles is the same God who lifts up.
Chiasm is a literary technique in the Bible where ideas are presented in a sequence (A-BC) and then repeated in reverse order (C-B-A) to form an 'X' shape.
God’s Warning Is Grace — Daniel 4:4–7
 • God warns before He judges.
 • Nebuchadnezzar’s dream is mercy, not condemnation.
 Notes:
The Nature of Pride — Daniel 4:8–17
 • Proverbs 16:18; Jeremiah 9:23-24; Romans 1:21-22
 • Pride is taking credit for what God has given and trusting in what God has not promised.
Notes: Truth Told with Compassion — Daniel 4:19–26
 • Daniel delivers hard truth with grief, not glee.
 • God confronts to restore, not to destroy.
Warning Signs of Pride
• Prayerlessness (Daniel 4:4) — ease without dependence.
• Truth‑avoidance (Daniel 4:6–8, 19) — keeping distance from voices that confront.
• Control fixation (Daniel 4:7) — reaching for systems and experts before surrender.
• Credit‑hoarding (Daniel 4:30) — “I, me, my” at the center of the story.
• Compassion shrinkage (Daniel 4:27) — the oppressed fade from view.
 Notes:
The Cure to Pride is Humility — Daniel 4:27
• Practice righteousness – turn from personal rebellion and align with God’s ways
• Show mercy to the oppressed/poor – repentance has an outward display in justice and
compassion.
• 1 Peter 5:6; James 4:6b-8
Practices for Cultivating Humility:
• Confession
• Gratitude
• Fasting
• Submission to Community
• Service / Justice Work
• Sabbath

Daily Examen — A 5-Minute Journaling Guide
1. Become Still
Take a breath and invite God’s presence.
Prayer: “Lord, let me see my day with Your eyes.”
2. Gratitude — Where did I receive from God today?
Write down 3 gifts from the day.
• Where did God show kindness?
• Who encouraged or helped me?
• What provision, joy, or strength did I receive?
“Lord, thank You for these good gifts.”
3. Honesty — Where did I resist God today?
Look back over the day slowly.
Write down one moment where pride, self-reliance, or sin surfaced.
• Where did I choose my way over God’s way?
• Where was I short, selfish, or dismissive?
• What truth or warning did I ignore?
“Lord, I name this before You. Forgive me and change me.”
4. Grace — How is God inviting me to walk differently tomorrow?
Listen for the Spirit’s gentle nudge.
Write a simple sentence:
“Tomorrow, with Your help, I will…”
“Lord, lead me into humility and restore me in Your grace.”
5. Rest in God’s Love
End with this truth:
“The God who humbles me is the same God who lifts me up.”
