Unshakeable: A Faith That Won’t Fold — Part 5

Facing The Furnace
Daniel 3:16–30

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego face a life or death choice around what or who they will worship. This is their story and what we can learn from their experience when we “face a furnace” in our life.

The Story

The story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 3:16–25

PLACE FOR NOTES:

The furnace which looked like the end of their lives turns out to be the greatest “can’t miss experience” of their lives because the furnace is the place where they meet God. They hoped to get delivered FROM the furnace, BUT God delivered them IN the furnace.

Sometimes God delivers people FROM the furnace but sometimes God delivers people IN the furnace. He is saying to us today through what these three men experienced that He will meet you in the furnace. When life gets difficult and even dangerous, I will be there.

Nebuchadnezzar’s Response

PLACE FOR NOTES:

There is a question this story wants us to answer for ourselves, and then there is an action step we can take in light of this story.

Question:
Is the primary goal of our life furnace avoidance?

Three Ways God Meets Us in the Furnace

  1. The INTERVENTION of God
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 3

  2. The INTERACTION of God
Moses and Aaron in Exodus 3–4

  3. The INNERVENTION or INNERACTION of God
    Paul in 2 Corinthians 12:7b–10

PLACE FOR NOTES:

Action Step

Because the book of Daniel is calling us to a deeper measure of devotion to God, instead of asking God primarily for comfort, riches, ease or security, we will pray:

God, give me an opportunity to show my devotion to you.

Ministry Goal

“The People of COMMUNITY will lead others to find and follow Jesus by B.L.E.S.S.ing their neighbors.”

B.L.E.S.S.

B — Begin with Prayer
L — Listen with Care
E — Eat Together
S — Serve with Love
S — Share Your Story

Taking It Home

We encourage you to take a few minutes today and this week to process this morning’s message. These questions are designed for discussion with your family, a friend, mentor, spouse, and small group. They are also useful for self reflection.

  1. What stands out to you in these passages from the Bible? From the message?

  2. What is difficult for you to understand or accept in these passages from the Bible? From the message?

  3. What is God saying in these passages and through what we heard in the message about Himself? About people? About you?

  4. What examples are there to follow, commands to obey, or promises to stand on from these passages in the Bible, and from what we heard in the message?
