Scripture Focus

“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. … If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.”
— John 15:18, 20b

Jesus prepares His followers for the reality of opposition—not to frighten them, but to strengthen them.

The Reality of Hostility

Throughout history, followers of Jesus have faced hostility and persecution—from the early church to believers today who suffer for their faith.
Even now, following Christ often means standing firm in love and truth when the world rejects it.

Reflection:
How have you seen or experienced opposition because of your faith?

Why the World Hates Followers of Jesus

John 15:18–25

  • The world rejects Jesus because His light exposes darkness.

  • Followers of Christ reflect His truth and love, which confront worldly values.

  • Our allegiance to Jesus separates us from the world’s system of self and sin.

Reflection:
Where do you feel tension between your faith and the world’s values?

We Are Not Alone

John 15:26–27

  • In the midst of hatred and opposition, Jesus gives the Holy Spirit—our Helper, Comforter, and Witness.

  • The Spirit empowers us to testify about Christ and to endure with faith and peace.

Reflection:
How has the Holy Spirit strengthened or comforted you during trials?

Jesus’ Warning and Encouragement

John 16:1–4

  • Jesus warns us so that we will not lose heart or fall away.

  • Trials are not a sign of God’s absence but an opportunity for deeper dependence on Him.

Reflection:
What helps you stay rooted in Christ when your faith is tested?

How Should We Respond to Hostility?

Matthew 5:43–48; Romans 12:14, 17–21

  • Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

  • Do not repay evil for evil but overcome evil with good.

  • Reflect the mercy and love of the Father even in suffering.

Reflection:
How can you show Christ’s love to those who misunderstand or mistreat you?
