Sermon Notes: No Longer Slaves
John 8:31–59
July 20, 2025
Opening Question:
How would you define freedom?
Take 2–3 minutes to discuss with someone near you. What does it mean to be truly free?
Key Verses:
• John 8:31–32 – “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings.
And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
• John 8:36 – “So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.”
Main Ideas:
1. True Discipleship = Remaining in Jesus’ Teachings
• Belief is not just intellectual—it’s transformational.
• Faithfulness leads to truth, and truth leads to freedom.
2. Freedom According to Jesus
• Not political or social freedom, but freedom from sin.
• Everyone who sins is a slave to sin (v.34).
• Jesus offers freedom and adoption into God’s family.
From Slaves to Sons:
• Slaves: Not part of the family | Sons: Permanent members
• Slaves: No authority | Sons: Carry the Father’s authority
• Slaves: No inheritance | Sons: Heirs of the Kingdom
Supporting Scriptures:
• Matthew 18:18
• Luke 10:19
• Ephesians 1:5
• Galatians 4:4–7
The Conflict:
• The crowd claims Abraham and God as their father.
• Jesus exposes their hearts: “You are children of your father the devil” (v.44).
• They reject truth because they don’t belong to God (v.47).
Identity Check:
• Abraham = man of faith → obeyed and trusted God.
• True children of Abraham = those who live by faith (Galatians 3:6–7).
• Jesus: “Before Abraham was born, I AM” (v.58) → clear claim to divinity.
Reflection:
• Who do you say Jesus is? (Liar, Lunatic, or Lord?)
• Are you living as a slave or as a child of God?
• What defines your identity—your past, your performance, your desires, or your position
in Christ?
Response Time:
• Need prayer? Come forward.
• Want to know Jesus? Talk to someone today.
• Struggling with freedom? Bring it to Jesus.
• Receive communion and be reminded of His grace.
• Worship freely—“I am a child of God.”
