Amazing Grace!

MESSAGE NOTES
So That You May Believe and Have Life – The Gospel of John
Part 23 – “Amazing Grace!”
John 7:53–8:11

As we continue our study of the Gospel of John, we come to one of the most well-known and powerful scenes in the life of Jesus—a moment that reveals the heart of God’s amazing grace. In this story, we witness a striking contrast between human judgment and divine mercy.

PLACE FOR NOTES:

A Note on the Passage
This story, though familiar and beloved, was not part of the earliest manuscripts of John’s Gospel. The most reliable early copies do not include it. However, early church leaders in the Western tradition recognized its authenticity as a true event from Jesus’ life, and it was eventually added to John’s Gospel.

Its inclusion reflects not only early Christian belief in the historical accuracy of the account, but also its alignment with Jesus’ character and mission.

John 8:3–11 – The Story
A woman caught in adultery is brought before Jesus by religious leaders, who demand that she be stoned according to the Law of Moses.

They are not seeking justice—they are trying to trap Jesus. But Jesus responds with wisdom and compassion, saying:

“Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.”

One by one, her accusers walk away.

Jesus, left alone with the woman, says:

“Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on sin no more.”

PLACE FOR NOTES:

This story paints a vivid picture of Jesus’ love, mercy, grace, and forgiveness. We thank God for sovereignly preserving it, because it teaches us profound truths:

The Judgment of Religious Leaders
The religious leaders in this passage lack compassion. They use the woman as a tool in their attempt to trap Jesus. Their hearts are hardened toward both grace and the human need for forgiveness.

PLACE FOR NOTES:

The Unmerited Mercy of God
Jesus offers the woman grace, not condemnation. His response demonstrates the overwhelming love of God—a love that meets us even in our worst moments.

No matter what we have done, God’s mercy is available.

PLACE FOR NOTES:

The God Who Has the Right to Condemn…
…is the very one who has a passionate desire to save.

Jesus has every right to judge us, but instead, He takes our sin upon Himself—offering forgiveness, restoration, and a new way of life.
