A Life of Worship

John 14:19-26 & Others

In Jesus’ encounter with a woman at a well in Samaria, they have a discussion about worship. Through their conversation, Jesus teaches us that:

1. The place where we worship is not nearly as important as who we worship and how we worship.

19 “Sir,” the woman said, “you must be a prophet. 20 So tell me, why is it that you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place of worship, while we Samaritans claim it is here at Mount Gerizim, where our ancestors worshiped?”21 Jesus replied, “Believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all about him, for salvation comes through the Jews.  John 4:19-22 (NLT)

PLACE FOR NOTES:

2. The Father actually seeks people who will be true worshippers who worship him in spirit and in truth.

23 But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. 24 For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”  John 4:23-24 (NLT)

25 The woman said, “I know the Messiah is coming—the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.” 26 Then Jesus told her, “I am the Messiah!” John 4:25-26 (NLT)

3. We can trust what Jesus said about the nature of true worship.

PLACE FOR NOTES:

Worship of God that is true worship and pleases him:

  • Worship is about giving GLORY to God.

We were created to worship God and give him glory: For everything comes from him; everything exists by his power and is intended for his glory. To him be glory evermore. Amen.” Romans 11:36 (NLT)

PLACE FOR NOTES:

  • EVERYTHING we do that brings glory to God is worship.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Romans 12:1 (NIV)

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 (NIV)

PLACE FOR NOTES:

  • When the body of believers is gathered, worship is far more than just the MUSIC.

PLACE FOR NOTES:

  • We worship God from the depths of our HEART, not merely with our words.

“‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’” Matthew 15:8-9 (NIV)

PLACE FOR NOTES:

  • We worship joyfully and EAGERLY, not merely out of duty or reluctantly.

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.  Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.

Psalm 100:1-2 (NIV)

I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord!”  Psalm 122:1 (NRSV)

PLACE FOR NOTES:

  • We worship ACTIVELY as a participant, not passively as a spectator.
